I've had an epic Sailor Moon saga rolling around in my head for some time now, but I have yet to get my lazy ass in gear to actually start writing it. Tonight, all of a sudden this scene from said saga demanded to be written out, now. So I wrote it down and figured I would post it up here to see what people thought of it. Maybe I might even be able to get myself to actually start writing the real thing.
I haven't done any real editing other than a spellcheck.
Just so there's no confusion it is a slight crossover with Ranma. (NOT A FUKUFIC!)
Tsukino Usagi grumbled under her breath as she unrolled her futon. Sleeping in an empty, echo-y, drafty, old dojo was not how she had planned to spend her summer. Of course, learning to fight hadn't been high on her list either. The fact that she would be spending her summer, her time of freedom and fun, doing both had left her a decidedly grumpy bunny.
"Check!"
The fact that her four friends had already set up their bedrolls and were playing cards without her didn't quite help things either.
"Minako, there is no check in Gin Rummy," Ami corrected.
"Whatever, read it and weep."
Oh Usagi was going to weep alright, if she couldn't untangle this mess of sheets. Maybe just stuffing everything in the suitcase hadn't been the best idea.
"So, what do you guys think of our new instructors," Minako's voice came over the sound of cards being shuffled.
"They're... not quite what I expected," Ami said.
"We don't really know them well enough yet," Makoto input, "They certainly seem to know their stuff, but beyond that."
"Not like that guys. I mean, don't you think Ranma-sensei is cute?"
Rei snorted, "Half of the time."
"They must have an, interesting, marriage," Ami-chan again.
Makoto shuttered, "I can't really imagine what that must be like."
"I think Akane-sensei hit the jackpot personally, a hunky guy and cute girl all in one package," Minako's voice carried a note of envy. Usagi, finally having finished her task, moved to join the discussion. Her eyes scanned the group as she sat down, Makoto and Rei were staring at Minako with looks of disbelief and Ami looked quite a bit redder than was normal, Minako on the other hand looked perfectly normal. It was Usagi who broke the silence, "I don't see the big deal. As long as they love each other what does it matter if he isn't always a he?"
"You wouldn't be saying that if it was your Mamo-chan who fell in that spring of drowned girl," Rei replied.
Usagi huffed, "Yes I would. I love Mamo-chan and I wouldn't care if he turned into a girl, or a rat, or even a really icky bug."
Makoto spoke up, "I can understand loving someone in spite of a problem like that, but what I want to know is why Mina-chan seems to think that Ranma-sensei's condition is a good thing."
"Supplementary my dear Mako-chan," Minako was interrupted by a groan from the rest of the group. Being used to it, however, she continued, "Some girls like boys, some girls like girls, some boys like girls, some boys like boys, and then there are some of both who like both. I would think that you would understand that Mako-chan, considering that you both date boys and crush on Haruka."
Makoto spluttered, "I don't have a crush on Haruka, I just admire her ability to be herself even when society says different."
"Suuuuuuure you do. So tell me, does Ranma-sensei remind you of your sempai, or do you prefer her other side." Makoto's only response was a glare. Minako simply grinned back and then chose a new target, "How 'bout you Ami-chan."
"Wha-what?!"
"You've been too quiet Ami-chan. Come on, what side of Ranma-sensei do you prefer?" When Ami turned redder than Minako had ever seen her, she knew she was onto something juicy, "Come on Ami-chan, the whole point of girl talk like this is to embarrass yourself, I just told the whole group that I'm bisexual, what could you possibly say that would be more shocking than that."
"It wasn't that shocking," Rei muttered quietly. Ami looked around at the group, Makoto was still glaring at Minako, Rei looked exasperated at the the blonde's antics, and Usagi was showing genuine interest. Ami's eventual response was so quiet as to be nearly inaudible, "I... I prefer Akane-sensei actually."
"What was that?" Minako leaned foward not quite sure Ami had even spoken. Ami, if possible, blushed harder, making Minako wonder if that color was healthy, and responded in a somewhat more confident tone, "Ranma-sensei's girl half is shorter than I like... I like Akane-sensei better."
Minako didn't miss a beat, " And Ranma-sensei's guy side?"
"I don't... I don't really like boys that way."
"AH HAH!!" Minako crowed, "I knew there was something off about the way Urawa-kun dropped off the map." Ami didn't respond, she was too busy staring at the ground. Minako was pleased as punch, she finally knew why none of her attempts to set the shy senshi up had worked out. This led to all sorts of interesting possibilities... including one sitting across from her. The look Makoto was currently giving Ami was not shock, well not entirely shock, and it certainly wasn't disapproval or disgust... It was... Heh heh heh, Ranma-sensei was too short huh, well Mako-chan was anything but short, and she certainly didn't look like she would be opposed to spending some quality time with Ami-chan.
Rei glanced down to the now forgotten deck of cards and thought about throwing them at Minako, the way the blonde had suddenly started laughing was creeping her out.
